Natures of Conflict

„Natures of Conflict“ explores the mystical architecture and landscape on on one of Norway’s glaciers „Fåbergstølsbreen“ in Jostedalen.
The glacial lake “Styggevatnet” is a newer hydro project, completed in 1989.
The dam resulted in the connection of two small lakes into a single reservoir of 6km in length and 90m in depth.
With its impressive altitude, 1200m above sea level, Styggevatnet represents huge potential for hydropower production.
The water is vertically dropping 1180m through the hydro turbines, producing the highest ‘head-pressure’ on any turbines in Northern Europe.

The reservoir holds water that had the potential to flood the Jostedalen valley. Major flooding is now a thing of the past for Jostedalen locals.
